Withheld For Good

Withheld For Good

By Joanne, Assistant Zone Leader in AMKMC

I had been wrestling with God over an issue recently but God had been silent and so I continued in the restlessness. One morning, I was walking in the park when I asked Him about it again, not really expecting an answer but this time He did answer.

He said, “Because you would have become too comfortable that you wouldn’t go when I send you out.” It was a surreal moment as I wondered if I was thinking this up or was it really God speaking. Then I thought about it and it resounded. I am a creature of comfort. If God had called me like Abraham and I had all the nice things back home, I wondered if I would have chosen comfort instead.

I learnt a lesson that day: Sometimes God withholds something from us because it would make us worldly and settle for this world. On the contrary, withholding is His providence and protection from being lured by this world. Until and unless we see holiness as something good, we will desire comforts above all and thus begrudge His withholding.

O Lord, may we not become so comfortable with this world that we (foolishly) desire lesser things. May we know that in your wisdom, you work for the good of those who love you. And may we trust in you, the One who upholds our life. (Ps 54:4)

To those who are struggling to see God’s good in a difficult situation, I pray that God may bless you with the wisdom, grace and love to walk through the mystery knowing that ‘those who seek the Lord lack no good thing’ (Ps 34:10).
